4 Mile Run Pedestrian-Cyclist Bridge
Arlington, VA
For years, Northern Virginia’s Four Mile Run has functioned as a flood control channel and a border between the City of Alexandria and Arlington County. More recently, community action through the Four Mile Run Restoration Master Plan have established ambitious and feasible goals to restore the ecology of the Run while re-establishing it as a cherished park space and a means of stitching together communities.
SCAPE worked with Grimshaw Architects and ARUP on the competition- winning strategy for the Four Mile Run Pedestrian- Cyclist Bridge, which reaches across the run to bring people to the shores of the stream and to each other. As a piece of transit and ecological infrastructure, the bridge links neighborhoods, streets, and pathways through the riparian and tidal ecosystems of the region.
