Abraham Joshua Heschel School

New York, NY

SCAPE worked with Gruzen Samton Architects on the green roof of New ‘Early Childhood Center, Lower and Middle School Building’ for Abraham Joshua Heschel School in Manhattan. The design aims to address the demands of the outdoor recreational / educational space for three different age groups of students, and also provide much-needed flexibility for the school to use. Carefully located and strategically planted zones not only provide wind buffers for this 9th floor green roof to make it enjoyable throughout the year, but also create ‘green discovery areas’ of various sizes and layouts which allow students and teachers to put their creativity into test. The greenhouse and adjacent organic farm will be a great asset for the school’s science program, where students can have hands-on organic farming experience. We took this project as an opportunity to rethink playground design in general. 100% construction documents were recently completed.
