The Lexington – Fayette Urban County Government Division of Water Quality is constructing a 10 million gallon wet weather storage tank along the path of the Legacy Trail in Lexington, Kentucky. SCAPE was invited to developed a fundable and implementable vision for how this critical water infrastructure intersects the recreational trail, a beloved resource of the community that connects downtown Lexington to its bluegrass landscape. Through a process of collaborative design and budgeting, three designs were narrowed down into a buildable vision that realigns the trail around the tank, while celebrating the tank’s function in keeping Lexington’s waterways clean. The site is at the nexus of infrastructural, ecological and recreational resources and it is commendable that the city has taken an integrated design approach that preserves the legacy of the Bluegrass landscape over time.
