In 2018, SCAPE was invited by philanthropists Quint and Rishy Studer to create a framework plan for the downtown waterfront of Pensacola, Florida, including design concepts for two catalytic pilot projects. Following an initial research and analysis phase, SCAPE worked closely with local residents and experts to identify shared goals and priorities guiding the overall design and programming of the project: creating a connected, accessible public realm along the water’s edge. The proposed public and open space enhancements also solve for climate-related flood risk, improve urban circulation, and capture value locally through parallel economic development strategies.
At Bruce Beach – an historic African-American recreation area – one catalyst project proposes a public park including extensive marsh restoration, a range of multi-use recreational space, and an education center celebrating local history, culture, and bay ecology. Further east, a second catalyst project dubbed the Hashtag Connector (due to its resemblance to the symbol in plan) proposes streetscape improvements that better connect the Downtown and Bayfront areas.
Ultimately, proposed improvements throughout the waterfront area are structured to generate better conditions for sustainable urban development, improving overall quality of life for residents while boosting long-term resilience and providing public amenities for current and future generations.
