Portner Flats Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

May 15, 2018

Last week, SCAPE had the privilege to participate in the long-awaited ribbon cutting ceremony for Portner Flats – a pioneer affordable housing development in Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was one of many prominent figures who spoke at the event, along with Marvin Turner of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, and others.

The 100% affordable housing development, located within the vibrant U Street corridor, replaced the original dilapidated development and doubled the amount of units to 96. Several services have also been planned to support residents in education, job searches, tutoring, wellness and fitness. SCAPE designed a rooftop terrace and ground-level courtyard that provide a variety of experiences for the residents. The rooftop space is activated with a large shaded playground, dining area, and community garden, nestled within raised planters. On the ground floor, a peaceful courtyard provides opportunities for a more passive experience.
