SCAPE designed this green roof for the Abraham Joshua Heschel School, an independent, co-educational day school located in Manhattan’s Upper West Side neighborhood. The LEED Gold Certified building and landscape serves students in grades pre-K through 12. The 16,000 SF landscape design addresses the programmatic needs of the differing age groups, providing much needed flexibility in a limited space. The design features outdoor and rooftop recreational and learning areas for the early childhood center, lower school, and middle school. A strategically placed windbreak landscape creates protective space for a greenhouse and adjacent organic garden, expanding the school’s science program into the outdoors.
