Rebuild by Design recently released “Elements of Effective Engagement,” the best practices for community engagement illustrated by the Hurricane Sandy Design Competition projects.
The public engagement and community outreach tools developed by the SCAPE team in the Living Breakwaters project are featured as best practices in four of the twelve examples listed. In particular, the interactive design elements such as physical models of the breakwaters and shore, time-lapse videos of sea levels, on site shore-walks and more make the outcomes more tangible, help to explain the process and ultimately generate excitement for the community to get involved. The SCAPE team even incorporated a virtual reality simulation to show what a breakwater would look like!
